The weather is unpredictable. Even today, the weather forecast is not always reliable. Therefore, some prefer to rely on the pawn rules.
Germany – What will spring bring? What do the peasant rules say about March 2022? Will it stay cold any longer or will you soon be able to go out in the sun with your t-shirt? It is these questions about the weather that you ask yourself every year when winter is slowly coming to an end. But even if modern technology with all kinds of measurements has a lot of data available for predictions and forecasts, you can never be completely sure. The pawn rules appear differently.
Centuries old and simple, farmer’s rules supposedly predict exactly what the weather will be like if there is rain, wind, snow or sun on a day – and often in easy-to-understand rhyme form, without much science.
Farmer’s Rules in March: What will the month of 2022 bring?
- 1st March: If it rains hard for Albinus, it makes the farmer very annoyed.
- If it rains on the first day of March – the commemoration of Saint Albinus of Angers – a difficult year follows for farmers. A similar peasant rule says: “When it rains on Saint Albin, there is neither hay nor straw.” It also refers to the commemoration of Saint Albinus of Angers.
- 3 March: Saint Kunigund warms up from below.
- According to the peasant rule, if the weather is nice on St. Cunégonde’s Day, the weather will be good throughout the year. Another variant is: “Laughing Kunigunde, she brings us good news.” But bad weather on March 3 means, conversely: “When Kunigunde was heavy with tears, the barn often remains empty.” It’s supposed to be even worse when there’s a thunderstorm : “If there’s thunder around the Kunigund, the winter will be colorful for a long time to come.”
- 6th March: Around the day of Fridolin, the last winter draws on.
- According to the rule, winter should end on March 6th – the day of Saint Fridolin. In further interpretations of this prophecy, shepherds are said to bring their sheep back to pasture. For agriculture, too, the farmer’s rule sets the date here to start work again: “After the day of Fridolein, the plow must be in the field.”
- 7th March: Perpetua and Felizitas, they bring us the first grass.
- According to old peasant wisdom, the grass should begin to sprout on the day of the martyrs Perpetua and Felicitas.
- 8th of March: When it’s thundering around St. Cyprian, you often put on your gloves.
- Another pawn rule that unmistakably makes a prediction that’s easy to remember. A thunderstorm on this day of St. Cyprian in early March predicts cold that will last longer.
- March 10: 40 knights with ice and snow hurt the oven for another 40 days.
- According to the peasant rules, the day of the 40 martyrs or the 40 knights is of great importance. The weather that prevails there will therefore remain for some time. One variant reads: “As the weather falls on 40 martyrs, the same lasts for 40 days.” Another variant even speaks of seven weeks.
- March 11: Storm and wind at Rosamunde bring good news.
- March 11th is the day of the martyr Rosamunde. If there is a strong wind that day, good weather is expected to follow soon. More specifically, another formulation even predicts it: “If Rosamunde brings storm and wind, Sybilla is kind to us.” The day of Sybilla is April 29th.
- March 12th: If the wind blows strong around Gregori, there are still 40 windy days.
- For the day of Gregorius, several farmer’s rules are ready to give instructions and even predict the behavior of migratory birds. So is a rule that applies on this day: “Gregor shows the farmer that he can sow in the field.” Another says that the swallows come back on him and move away again on August 24th. Another point that concerns animals: “After the day of Gregory, the wild duck also lays its egg.”
- March, 15: Lucretia moist, grain sacks light.
- Short, simple and concise. On the day of St. Lucretia, according to peasant rule, one must hope that it will remain dry. Otherwise there is a risk of a bad harvest.
- 17. March: Sunny Gertrudentag, joy may bring the farmer.
- The day of St. Gertrude is supposed to give information about whether the work in the garden and in the field will be crowned with success. “If Gertrud is sunny, the gardener will be happy.” If the weather is good that day, you should start gardening. But if it gets cold, that’s a sign of cool weather: “If Sankt Gertrud sees ice, it doesn’t get hot all year round.”
- 19th March: If it is clear to Josephus, it will be a blessed year.
- The day of St. Sibylla already mentioned on March 11 is also the day of St. Joseph. If the weather is good that day, that should be a sign of a good year. Here the winter is over once and for all according to the peasant rules: “Once Josephi is there, the winter is definitely over.”
- March, 20th: Like the weather at the beginning of spring, so it is all summer long.
- According to the farmer’s rules, at the beginning of spring on the calendar, it should already become apparent what the weather will be like in the long run. In a variation of the rule, the weather that starts spring is said to be what summer ends with.
- March 21st:As the weather shows for a week after Benedict, so it shows for the whole summer.
- The day of St. Benedict and St. Lupicinius is not only similar to the beginning of spring. It is also an occasion to sow seeds, according to numerous farmers’ rules: “If you want barley, peas, onions thick, sow them according to St. Benedict.” Another variant says that the sun will shine on this day.
- March 23: If the cold wind blows on Otto day, the deer still like acorns for four weeks.
- Another Peasant Rules prediction says that a cold wind on the day of St. Otto will bring four more cold weeks. Deer eat acorns over the winter, as these are a source of nutrients that can also be found in the cold season.
- March 24: When the sun shines on Sankt Gabriel, the farmer has a lot of joy and delight.
- Although the memorial of Archangel Gabriel was changed to September 29 in the last century, the peasant rule refers to the original date. It is also said to bring a good harvest when the weather is good.
- 25th March: If the night sky was bright and clear before the Annunciation, it means a good weather year.
- On the day of the Annunciation, a clear night sky portends good weather for the rest of the year, according to peasant rule. However, there are other predictions related to the date. According to the rule, the swallows return here too and frost after this day should no longer pose a major threat to the harvest: “Maria unties the vines and also accepts a light frost.” But another farmer’s rule of this day says also: “If it’s frozen after the Mariennacht, 40 more frosts will be born.”
- 26th of March: If it is damp outside around Ludger, the grain soils also remain light.
- As on March 15, the same applies to St. Ludger’s Day: If it doesn’t stay dry, the harvest will be bad. At least when it comes to the pawn rule.
- 27th of March: If heaven is clear again on Rupert, it will also be in July.
- The weather on St. Rupert’s Day is intended to give a direct view of the weather in July. If it rains here, it should also rain two months later. If it’s nice, the summer month will be nice.
- March 29: Like St. Berthold’s mind, spring will come.
- The day of St. Berthold should give an outlook on the further weather situation. According to the farmer’s rule, its weather indicates what the rest of spring will be like.
- March 30: Like March 30th, like summer.
- In the same sense it is with the pawn rules with March 30th. Depending on what the weather is doing on that date, summer will be warm, cold, windy, or rainy.
- March 31: Like March 31, so fall.
- The conclusion of March’s pawn rules is a rule similar to those of the previous two days. With the difference that her forecast refers to autumn.
Farmer’s Rules in March 2022: A set of rules from the old days
It can be observed again and again that the weather does not stick to wisdom and thus also not to farmer’s rules in March 2022. Even if there is a lot of data about wind directions, low pressure areas and high pressure areas, it is never possible to predict with absolute certainty what the weather will be like over the coming months. Sometimes current predictions change daily.
And yet there is a reason that the peasant rules have always been passed on over a long period of time. They arose from the observations of many generations of farmers who have passed on their knowledge and assumptions about connections over and over again. A blanket judgment that all the rules are nonsense cannot be expressed.
The rules do not offer 100% security, but there are still some of the pawn rules in March with a surprisingly high hit rate. (mda)
