From a certain age, it is no longer necessary to renew the National Identity Document
The National Identity Document is mandatory, personal and unique. It is the way that Spaniards have to certify themselves as citizens with the nationality of the territory in which they live and serves to identify the person unequivocally. For this reason, the law requires you to always carry it with you when you go out to be documented at all times, in case of any unforeseen event or if it is required by the security forces.
In addition to being unique, another characteristic is that it has a validity period, so it expires after a certain time and it is necessary to renew it so that it is always valid. The deadlines vary depending on the age of the citizen. Thus, those under 5 years of age must renew it every two years; the period is extended to five years for those under 30; while people under seventy years of age must go to request the new card every ten years. And then?
Once the age of 70 has passed, the DNI issued to citizens is the permanent one. The main characteristic is that they will no longer have to renew the document every ten years, so that the first time they come when they are 70 years old or older, they will obtain the permanent and definitive DNI. According to the INE, more than 6.5 million people entered the 1970s in 2019 alone.
But there is a situation where someone can request this document. In this case we are talking about people over 30 years of age who prove the condition of great disability. This is an exception to the permanent validity that is granted to people or workers who have a legally recognized disability. Although in some cases the administration will study the request to determine permanence, those who suffer from a disability with functional and anatomical losses and need attention for activities of daily living, will receive the permanent DNI with complete certainty.
