Yellow weather alert for several Italian regions: Civil Protection urges maximum caution
Italy continues to be hit by a wave of bad weather which has led to a sharp drop in temperatures compared to last week. This weekend will feature heavy rain, thunderstorms, snowfall and intense ventilation, with lower than normal temperature values, especially during precipitation. The prelude to the summer of recent days seems to be over.
The Department of Civil protection has issued a yellow weather alert for tomorrow, April 20, covering five Italian regions: Lombardy, Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise and Puglia. The alert concerns the risk of thunderstorms and hydrogeological risk. In particular, the weather warning includes a yellow alert for the risk of thunderstorms in the central regions and Lombardy, while an alert for hydrogeological risk has been assessed in Puglia and Abruzzo.
The regions and basins affected by the ordinary criticality due to storm risk are different, with Abruzzo, Lazio, Lombardy and Molise under the yellow alert. For hydrogeological risk, Puglia and Abruzzo are the regions involved. The bad weather will also bring an intensification of northern winds, with Foehn phenomena in the Alps and the North-West, Tramontana in Liguria, Bora on the upper Adriatic and Mistral on the Major Islands.
Cloud cover will be present from the morning over the eastern Alps and central regions, with rain and thunderstorms. In the afternoon the instability will spread across Veneto, Emilia Romagna, central regions and southern Italy, with a risk of showers, storms and even hail. They are expected snowfall on the Venetian Prealps and Apennines between 1300 and 1500 metres. Despite the bad weather, sunny spells persist in the North-West, in Calabria and on the Islands. In the evening, instability is still expected in the middle Adriatic and in the south, with temperatures rising especially in Sicily and southern Italy.
The Civil Protection calls for maximum caution and recommends taking into account the weather forecasts to avoid dangerous situations. The weekend will be full of rain so pay attention to trips out of town and road conditions for bikers and motorists.
