One of the most important people at 343 Industries today is Kiki Wolfkill, who is also one of the producers of the TV series. Halo for Paramount+. Her work began as an executive producer for the Xbox studio after Bungie left the franchise in the past. Since then, Wolfkill has positioned himself as one of the crucial minds when talking about this property. Thus, we recently had the opportunity to speak with Kiki regarding the series of Haloand what this show means to her and the franchise.
Being a fundamental part of Halo in the world of video games and television, there is no one better to talk about the biggest inspirations that this version of Master Chief took. This character has been present in different mediaso there is a great opportunity to make it very special with the character.
Is this version of Master Chief inspired by the work of 343 Industries or Bungie, or a combination of the two?
“I think the Master Chief, even in the games, is a product of all the Master Chiefs that have come before. We’ve always been clear with who this character is. What’s different about the series is that we’re showing a whole new side of John-117, as well as the Master Chief we all know and love.”
The series takes inspiration from games, books, and other media. What is your favorite?
“That is a complicated thing. Since I am a huge consumer of entertainment, I love to read, I love podcasts, I love television, movies, video games, and they all have a different purpose. I love the narrative structure of a video game, it gives me something different, and it’s something that he managed to connect with on several levels. However, there are times when I want to go back, and I want someone to tell me a story, and I want someone else to take me on a journey, instead of me. So I have to say I love them both. When I go on vacation I tend to just read, so a little bit of everything.”
However, the position Kiki finds herself in is not something she sought. The producer began her career in video editingand wanted to be in documentaries, but after seeing the work being done on Halo, there was no other way to go.
What was the event that inspired you to enter the video game industry? Since this is not your first adventure with Halo.
“I was very lucky, because I fell into video games, and I love video games, but I wanted to make documentaries. I got into video editing, and I started doing cinematics for games, and that was amazing, because I love how creativity and technology come together. Once I had that experience, and understood what an incredible effort it is to make a game, I just didn’t look back. I was lucky enough to fall into this, but once I was in the industry, it was everything I wanted.”
Having a very important role focused on being aware of Halo, both in the world of video games and television, Kiki has a very important and difficult task, since you need to find a middle ground between the ideas that 343 Industries and Paramount bring to the table. This may sound simple, but the truth is that it is more complicated than it sounds.
You also work with 343 Industries, how difficult was it to find the middle ground between the vision they have in the games and the Paramount production?
“As 343, I was fortunate to have amazing and creative collaborators, like the showrunner, and obviously Steven Spielberg is involved, Otto Bathurst was the director of the pilot, so we worked closely with them to figure out what the series needed to be and what it was. what it wanted to be, I think that’s something very important: what the story wants to be. So we started out with the goal of making the story really represent Halo, the themes of hope, heroism and discovery, but knowing that we wanted to explore Master Chief as a character, which is something we can’t do in games in the same way. , then [la producción] it became a constant back and forth between creating the story, building on the canon, where we need to diverge in order for the story and the character to have a little more freedom; And if we’re going to do that, how do we make it still feel like part of the Halo universe, even if it’s not exactly how it was shown in the games, or written in a book?”
Fortunately, Kiki’s work seems to be paying off. the series of Halo Coming to Paramount+ on March 24. Along with this, you can also check out our interview with Pablo Schreiber, the actor who plays Master Chief in this production, here.
