Lawyer, Deputy Chairman of the ICA “Klishin and Partners” Andrey Shugaev on Monday, March 21, in an interview with Izvestia, commented on the results of the court session on the Meta platform.
On this day, the Tverskoy Court of Moscow decided to immediately ban the activities of Meta (owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) in Russia in connection with the extremist activities of the American company.
According to Shugaev, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation absolutely rightfully demanded that Meta be recognized as an extremist organization after the statement of its press secretary Andy Stone that the company was lifting restrictions on “calls for violence against Russian military personnel” in some countries.
The oversight agency saw this as inciting hatred and enmity towards “the citizens of the Russian Federation”, and also stated that such steps “shape the perception of the permissibility of terrorist activities,” he added.
“Later, Stone turned on the fool and posted a screenshot of the mailing on Twitter. It says the company has “temporarily allowed forms of political expression that would normally violate our ban on incitement to violence.” At the same time, it was noted that such appeals against civilians are unacceptable,” the lawyer emphasized.
According to Shugaev, the outcome of the court hearings was obvious – Meta was recognized as an extremist organization “with all the ensuing legal consequences,” and individual Meta employees who allowed the publication of such extremist materials will face long prison terms.
The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation sent the statement of claim to the court on March 11. On the same day, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case in connection with calls for murder and violence against Russians by Meta employees. A few days later, Roskomnadzor restricted access to Instagram in Russia. Facebook was blocked in the country on March 4th.
The blocking of sites and the recognition of Meta as an extremist organization was initiated after it became known about the company’s decision to allow in some countries not to block users’ calls for violence against Russian citizens and the military.
