Even less hazardous waste was brought to collection in the spring round.
Dangerous Waste such as paint, solvents, motor oils, energy-saving lamps and batteries were unusually imported to the collection trucks in the Helsinki region during the spring collection round, even though there were almost 300 collection points in the Helsinki metropolitan area and Kirkkonummi.
The amount of goods accumulated was less than 44,000 kilos, which is less than in the previous round in 2020, when the number of customers at collection points was halved due to interest rate restrictions.
Up to 100,000 kilograms of hazardous waste has been received in the maximum collection round.
The monitoring of the Helsinki Region Environmental Services (HSY) has found that less hazardous waste has also been imported to Sortti stations than usual.
With the waste management operations manager Marjut with Mänttys there is no ready-made explanation of what exactly has happened.
“I called Pirkanmaa’s waste management because of the matter, and the exact same phenomenon has been observed there,” says Mäntynen.
One the theory is that people use more corporate services for repairs or car maintenance, for example. Companies have their own path to hazardous waste collection.
“We found out how much hazardous waste has been found in mixed household waste. Its amount has risen somewhat, meaning people have put hazardous waste in the wrong place. However, this does not explain the overall situation, ”says Mäntynen.
The phenomenon is recent, as the collection cycle has had to be postponed or even canceled in the last two years due to the corona pandemic.
On the other hand, during a corona pandemic has been rumored to be enthusiastic about renovating and decorating their homes.
HSY will organize an extra recyclable collection for hazardous waste next autumn.
For collection trucks less than usual, about 81,000 kilos of scrap electrical and metal scrap were also imported this spring. In the four years before the corona pandemic, the amount of scrap varied between 165,000 and 208,000 kilograms per year.
HSY is not very concerned about the amount of WEEE, as many companies accept these types of waste free of charge. The assumption is that people have learned to take scrap electrical and metal to large supermarkets, for example.
