The earth shook again at Italy’s supervolcano – several times. Authorities report a new seismic swarm hitting the region, causing fear.
Naples – The so-called supervolcano in southern Italy has been causing great concern for months. Early on Saturday morning (May 18th), several earthquakes tore residents of the area out of bed and caused fear among the population.
The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) initially reported an earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale this morning. This happened around 6:30 a.m. The institute later revised its assessment downwards and spoke of a magnitude of 2.8. But a smaller earthquake was also recorded at 6:06 a.m. According to the information, this reached a magnitude of 2.2. In a press release, the INGV speaks of a new so-called seismic swarm around the Phlegraean Fields in the west of Naples.
Earthquake swarm at Italy’s supervolcano
According to the classification of the German Federal Association for Geothermal Energy, the current two earthquakes can be classified in the “extremely light” category. From a magnitude of 3 on the Richter scale, one would speak of a “very light” earthquake that can often be felt – but damage is rare.
“Our Italy situation center is in contact with the disaster protection structures in the region. Initial checks show no damage,” the Italian Ministry of Civil Protection also announced on Saturday (May 18) on X (formerly Twitter).
“We can’t sleep here anymore”: another earthquake in Italy
However, the earthquakes once again caused considerable shock among the residents of the area. Many wrote on social networks that the tremors woke them up. In this respect, the earthquake was obviously clearly noticeable. The consistency with which the region has been hit by earthquakes for months is now causing not only great concern but also fatigue among citizens. “We can’t sleep here anymore,” says one resident loudly Corriere della Sera. The last tremors only occurred on Thursday (May 16).
According to current data, activity in the region is even increasing and there is a risk of stronger earthquakes in the near future. A new study on the Italian supervolcano also suggests that magma could rise. (rist)
