Update from March 13, 4:12 p.m.: In the Ukraine war, there is apparently progress in the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Mykhailo Podoliak, advisor to Ukraine’s President Zelensky, explained in a video that the negotiations would be more constructive than before. Russia has understood that the Ukrainian side will not accept any concessions. The first results could therefore be available in the next few days. The Russian side confirmed this. According to the RIA news agency, Kremlin negotiator Leonid Slutsky stated that both sides could soon come to a common position.
According to Ukrainian sources, the third round of negotiations for a ceasefire is scheduled to begin on Monday at 3:00 p.m. CET. Podoljak announced the talks in neighboring Belarus in the short message service Twitter. Russia initially did not confirm its participation in the talks.
Putin change of course? Selenskyj sees the new Kremlin approach – even meetings of the presidents are no longer completely absurd
First report from March 13, 2022:
Kyiv – “Now they have started to talk about something – and not just to make ultimatums”: With these words, Volodymyr Zelenskyj commented from his point of view on the negotiations in the Ukraine war with the government of Vladimir Putin*.
Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President, sees the first changes in the position of Russia, which is now pursuing a “fundamentally different approach”, he told international journalists in Kyiv on Saturday (March 13).
Ukraine war negotiations: Zelenskyy “glad” about signal from Putin
In the meantime, they have “started to talk”. The 44-year-old explained that he was “glad” to have “received a signal from Russia”. It is the first time in more than two years that Moscow is ready for a dialogue.
Russia’s* President Putin had already spoken of movement in the negotiations on Friday. The Russian negotiators informed about “certain positive changes” in the “practically daily” talks. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Interfax agency that the talks would now be held in online format. Ukraine confirmed this.
Negotiations in the Ukraine war have so far failed to create a ceasefire
According to Zelenskyy, the involvement of Ukraine’s western partners* in the Unian agency negotiations was insufficient. Referring to security guarantees for his country, he said Ukraine “cannot trust Russia after such a bloody war.” Negotiations on a general ceasefire have so far been unsuccessful.
Zelenskyi had suggested Jerusalem as a possible location for negotiations on an end to the war with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Today it is not constructive to meet in Russia, in Ukraine or in Belarus. These are not the places where we can find understanding for ending the war,” Zelenskyi told journalists on Saturday. “Do I think that Israel can be such a country, and Jerusalem in particular? I think so.”
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett recently acted as a mediator and held talks with both Putin and Zelensky. In principle, the Kremlin did not rule out a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy. “But first, both delegations and ministers must do their part to ensure that the presidents do not meet for the sake of the process, not for the discussion, but for the sake of the result,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.
