The professor. Giacomo Costa, occasional but affectionate collaborator of this newspaper, after having published, on Wednesday 11 May approx “War between Russia and Ukraine, dialogue without dogma between two people”, In which he reproduced a polite and correct conversation between two people with different views on the war, he received some messages in which he is sent to take a stand. In particular one particularly compelling from Adalgisa D. Here is his answer.

Dear Adalgisa,
I try to answer your question: if the Ukrainians are so good that they have stopped the invasion and are demolishing the armaments of the Russians and exterminating their officers, why not rejoice and even redouble our efforts to “help” them?
It is true that I do not enjoy it.
The beginning of the invasion left me completely unprepared and I tried to update myself, but I quickly discovered that there are differences of opinion on many facts, which in principle should be objectively ascertainable. Instead, some accuse the accounts of the others of tendentiousness.
For example, this invasion is according to some the continuation of a conflict not only creeping that has lasted for about twenty years, with the overthrow of legitimate governments by minorities belonging to unidentified groups. The nature of the clashes and sniping, according to some of the coups, according to others of the just popular uprisings, has never been clarified, and one would have to read a lot of specialized literature to be able to do so. One thing is certain is that the Ukrainian army had been well armed and trained by NATO for many years: this at least the proud declaration of the NATO Secretary, Stoltenberg.
In Russia commands Putinin an almost dictatorial way. In Ukraine, who? The legitimate president, Zelenski? There Born? The US embassy? The numerous American senators and secretaries of state constantly coming and going between Washington and Kiev? Trump, Bidenboth assiduous weavers of doubts business in Ukraine? The leaders of the armed gangs who, after having replaced the police in their own way in the Russophile territories, were first employed in the police, then even in the army for “missions and special operations”, a sinister phrase?
I have found it remarkable that in order to induce the battalion, or regiment, Azov to surrender (which seems to have not entirely happened) it was necessary an invitation and a high praise from the USA as well as the order, also full of praise, of Zelenski. Could it be that, while poor Putin worried that Ukraine would not join NATO, it has already become the 51st in the United States?
Conversely, it would appear that the terms of a sensible agreement have been identified for several years and were contained in the famous Minsk agreements, 1 and 2, unfortunately violated by both sides, perhaps because they were not sufficiently guaranteed by the European nations that had organized them. If I understand correctly, the very recent Italian plan follows them. All serious diplomats agree. I don’t understand why they weren’t implemented when they were stipulated in 2014. I honestly don’t know, but I believe that without understanding it we won’t even be able to understand the Russian invasion.
The invasion immediately turned into a war, given the excellent state of the Ukrainian army, which was already armed and modernly trained at the beginning of the invasion. Therefore, as has been repeated for weeks, not a heroic army against a defenseless people. It would appear that Putin, who believed himself to be almost omniscient, did not suspect the nature of those who were waiting for his army: a real crime for one who planned an invasion that should have been short and painless in his calculations. And the war became one war of NATO and the USA against Russia, through Ukraine.
Cecilia Strada she became a star because she pointed out that the fact of being a dubious democracy does not mean that the Ukrainians were attacked, suffer and die. Unfortunately undeniable. In the discourses on this invasion we constantly move between the uncertain and the unknown, a source of complexity, on the one hand, and the self-evident on the other, with a strong tendency to dwell on this second reassuring pole. Hence the undoubted success of Cecilia. There seems to be no intermediate position.
I thought I found her with many others. The more arms to the Ukrainians, the longer the war will last and the more victims will be. While you are there 40 nations eager to punish the Russiathe war takes place in the sole Ukraine. That’s why the 40 nations they are all happy. Their citizens don’t die … Now, the need for weapons also depends on the objectives that one assumes, or that they want to make the Ukrainian army take over.
For example, negotiate on the basis of the old Minsk agreements it is one thing, to want to drive the Russians out of Ukrainian territory another, to achieve the complete destruction of the Russian offensive potential (Ramstein’s speech) yet another.
It was thought that for the second and third objectives a long-lasting war was necessary, with the destruction and depopulation of Ukraine and serious imbalances in the supply of essential food for their survival in several African countries. It doesn’t seem that Biden, so enthusiastic about the war as to suggest that his continuation is for him a wedding invitation, nor Zelenski have asked themselves this question. Is it possible that the dead … are not citizens of anyone?
There is a possible flaw in this speech. It does not take into account that 1) the Russian army, in which discontent and demoralization reigns, could disintegrate at any moment, and 2) the superiority of armaments and the rapidity of information provided by the US and some European countries between which ours to Ukraine could prove overwhelming. Circumstances 1) and 2), although independent in their origin, could reinforce each other.
Then it could all be over in a few more weeks, with the maximum target being achieved. As our Prime Minister said, “Putin is not invincible.” Who knows why even in this unlikely but not impossible case, I would not be happy?
