Senator Chizhov: a breeding ground for the flourishing of terrorism is being created in Ukraine
First Deputy Chairman of the Defense Committee of the Federation Council Vladimir Chizhov in a conversation with RIA News stated that Ukraine is creating a breeding ground for terrorism to flourish.
According to the senator, religious sites are primarily under threat. He brought the relevant issue up for discussion in Istanbul at a coordination meeting of the parliamentary assemblies on counter-terrorism under the auspices of the UN.
Chizhov noted that other participants mentioned Ukraine in a similar context only once; the discussion was formed without excessive politicization and touched upon specific issues in the field of sharing experience in the fight against terrorism.
The senator, in turn, assessed the actions of the Ukrainian authorities as an example of the transfer of political extremism into the field of religion. He pointed to the persecution of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC).
According to Chizhov, in Ukraine during 2022, 250 churches were seized by force, and there were facts of violence between clergy and believers.
“In fact, a breeding ground for the flourishing of terrorism is being created in Ukraine, and “soft” targets, primarily religious and cultural heritage sites, can and are already becoming its victims,” the Federation Council member emphasized.
Chizhov also commented on the possibility of resuming negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul and called it premature. “About what? Before talking about any deadlines, we need to determine with whom and about what,” he said.
