“Kommersant”: the production of sparkling wines in Russia increased by 43.6% due to cheap brands
In the first quarter of this year, the volume of sparkling wine production from the 20 largest Russian producers increased by 43.6 percent, to 3.248 million decalitres, compared to the same period last year. About this with reference to data from alcohol market participants writes “Kommersant”.
Retail sales of this type of beverage, according to Rosalkogoltabakkontrol, over the same period increased by 13.3 percent, to 5.4 million deciliters. Manufacturers of the cheap product are responsible for the increase in consumption of this type of alcohol.
The sharpest dynamics – plus 82 percent – was noted at the Derbent Sparkling Wine Factory (203 thousand deciliters). Kuban-Vino increased production by 74 percent, to 571 thousand deciliters, and Abrau-Durso – by 34 percent, to 775 thousand.
The head of the Center for the Development of National Alcohol Policy, Pavel Shapkin, explained that the Derbent plant sells its wines at almost the lowest possible price, which is 239 rubles for a 0.75-liter bottle.
The growing interest of Russians in cheap drinks is confirmed by the rise of a new company on the market, Salyut Alko, registered in Beslan, to ninth place in terms of production volume. Previously, the manufacturer produced inexpensive vodka, but is now switching to sparkling vodka.

The head of the WineRetail information center, Alexander Stavtsev, noted that the attractive price allows the drink to be deprived of its traditional New Year’s status. Now, in just three summer months, Russians drink as much sparkling wine as they drank in the entire year in the early 2000s. Experts interviewed by the publication believe that only an increase in the minimum retail price at the beginning of next year can slow down the dynamics.
Earlier, the director of the Center for Research of Federal and Regional Alcohol Markets (CIFRRA), Vadim Drobiz, warned that producers of low-alcohol drinks in Russia will soon begin to massively change their recipes in order to make them worse, but cheaper. They will have to take such actions due to a change in the calculation principle and, as a consequence, a multiple increase in the excise tax from May 1.
