At least five people have died and five others were injured after Russia’s bombing of Kiev’s television tower on Tuesday, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said on social media. Before carrying out the attack, the Russian Defense Ministry warned that it would attack information and propaganda centers in Kiev and asked residents of nearby residences to leave their homes.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned that the current situation in the Ukrainian capital is “dangerous” and that the city’s defense is being expanded with the installation of fortifications and checkpoints at the entrances. “As the enemy approaches, the situation in Kiev becomes more dangerous. Our fighters, the Territorial Defense units, are fighting heroically for our land. We are strengthening our defense. Fortifications and checkpoints are being installed at the entrances to the city. And I ask everyone to remain calm. Please do not leave unless you hear an air raid siren,” he said in a video addressed to local residents.

Klitschko said that the city’s main services continued to operate, although public transport and the metro had reduced opening hours. A curfew remains in effect from 8pm to 8am.

Since yesterday, a long Russian military convoy has been detected on the outskirts of Kiev by satellite images, but today it turned out to be larger than initially thought, according to the Ukrainian news agency “Unian”. According to satellite images from Maxar Technologies, which regularly reports on the military situation in Russia, the column is 64 kilometers long and consists of armored cars, artillery and other vehicles.
