On the Abu Dhabi track the Red Bull can count a total of four victories (Sebastian Vettel 2009, 2010 and 2013 and Max Verstappen 2020) and as many pole positions. The Anglo-Austrian team hopes to be able to celebrate the drivers ‘and constructors’ titles in the world championship battle that is pitting it against Mercedes. If the constructors’ championship seems to be quite far away – with 28 points to recover – the drivers one seems to be closer, with Verstappen and Hamilton reaching Yas Marina on equal points. Clearly there is fear at Red Bull for the Mercedes engine, which could give a great decisive advantage considering the changes made on the Emirates track, which have undoubtedly made it faster.
Verstappen thus presented the weekend that could crown him champion: “First of all, I am thrilled to be returning to Abu Dhabi. Last year cannot be taken as a point of reference, because there were several factors that influenced it. We have lacked a bit of pace in the last few races, but we hope that this is not the case this weekend as well. There have been some changes and the track is now much faster. It will be interesting to see how this affects the set-up of the car. It will be important to make a good qualification. We have won a lot this season and had a great time. We have been much more competitive than in previous years and therefore as a team we can be proud of what we have achieved. We are on equal points and I know that as a team we will give everything to win this world championship. It will be an exciting race and we want to finish the season in the best possible way ”.
Sergio Perez hopes to end the season in the best possible way: “We had a good pace in Jeddah, but sadly we weren’t able to capitalize on that over the weekend. With the red flag we were really unlucky and the rest of the race was not ideal. But we will keep pushing and we will not give up. The layout has changed from last season, becoming much faster than in the past. I can’t wait to check it out on the track on Friday. For the fans and for the team it was a great season, we gave our all and we will continue to do so until the last lap. I will finish my first year at Red Bull Honda, I feel at home with the team and I can’t wait to get more next. We have everything to start on the right foot in 2022, hoping it will be a successful year for the team ”.
