Max Verstappen was far from fit when he started the United States Grand Prix on Sunday. According to Red Bull chief executive Helmut Marko, the Dutchman and his Mexican teammate Sergio Pérez had stomach problems before the start.
“It even looked black for a while,” Marko told the German motorsport magazine Auto Motor und Sport.
Pérez stated immediately after the race, in which he finished third, that he had suffered badly. He was already feeling unwell before the race and that only got worse as his drinking system turned out to be faulty. The Mexican felt the forces drain from his body. ,,It was terrible. This was the toughest and longest race of my career,” said Pérez.
Verstappen, however, did not flinch in the race. He won a tactical joust with Mercedes’ rival Lewis Hamilton and triumphed for the eighth time this season. ,,Max has recovered himself with breathing exercises and drinking,’ said Marko. ,,It is unbelievable how strong he is mentally. He is driving at the limit, is not in top shape and still thinks about the strategy. His performance, but also that of Pérez is startling,” said 78-year-old Marko, the man who brought Verstappen to Red Bull at the time.
