Verstappen, reckless maneuvers in the pit lane
PL2 in Abu Dhabi allowed little action on the track, considering the two red flags generated by the accidents of Carlos Sainz and Nico Hülkenberg. Taking into account how the second session was the only truly indicative session in terms of race pace, it is clear that seeing the actual time halved was not pleasant for the riders. So, someone like Max Verstappen he didn’t think twice about making room for himself even with his “shoulders”.
Exiting the pit lane after the last red flag, Super Max first came alongside George Russell’s right (overtaking him just after crossing the line) and then Lewis Hamilton’s. The seven-time world champion, seeing Verstappen in the mirrors, moved slightly to the right, preventing his rival from overtaking him for a few seconds. Verstappen, to avoid crashing into the wall, was forced to lift his foot, then found the gap and overtook the #44, doing the same with Pierre Gasly, who was in front of him.
Verstappen’s words
“Upon exiting the pit lane they had to move, everyone was going slow and I had to go to the track because I had little time. They kept getting in the way and once I tried to pass they tried to push me against the wall, which is clearly not good“.
“We will certainly have a lot of ground to make up in tomorrow’s third session to prepare for qualifying“, continued the reigning world champion. “I wasn’t able to get much out of this session, also because our balance was quite out of phase with a lot of bouncing and a lot of understeer, so we’ll have to figure everything out by tomorrow“.
