A vehicle broke into a Christmas parade last Sunday (21) in the state of Wisconsin, in the north of the United States, injuring more than 20 people, police said.
Officials were still compiling information about the incident, which occurred shortly after 4:30 pm local time (7:30 pm GMT), while spectators in the city of Waukesha, a Milwaukee suburb, watched the annual parade.
“An SUV vehicle invaded our Christmas stop, which we were doing downtown,” Police Chief Dan Thompson told reporters. “More than 20 individuals were injured as a result of this incident.”
“The Waukesha Police Department recovered the suspect vehicle. An investigation is ongoing,” he added, stating that police had identified a suspect.
Angelito Tenorio was at the parade and told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he “saw an SUV pass, accelerate and fly by at full speed along the way to the stop.”
“And then we heard a loud bang and deafening screams from the people who were hit by the vehicle,” he added.
Police said several people were taken to hospital.
The newspaper also reported that a video showed the SUV speeding towards the parade right behind a school band.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said he and his wife were “praying for Waukesha tonight and for all children, families and community members affected by this meaningless act.”
“We are in contact with local partners and are waiting for further information,” he added.
