In a statement published on Saturday (12), the Holy See said that, in a “serious and unjustified” decision, Archbishop Waldemar Stanislaw Sommertag, apostolic nuncio to Managua since 2018, was forced to leave the country immediately.

According to the publication, the Holy See received “with surprise and pain” the statement that the Nicaraguan regime had withdrawn approval from its representative in the country. “Such a disposition is incomprehensible, since during his mission Archbishop Sommertag worked tirelessly for the good of the Church and the Nicaraguan people, especially the most vulnerable, always seeking to foster good relations between the Apostolic See and the Nicaraguan Authorities,” the Holy See said. .

The Vatican said it was convinced the decision “does not reflect the feelings of the deeply Christian people of Nicaragua.”

Bishop Waldemar Stanislaw Sommertag, a Polish national, was sent on a mission to Nicaragua in 2018, a time when protests against dictator Daniel Ortega erupted across the country.
