Van Gerwen flew off the starting blocks, looked eager and didn’t give Ashton a chance. He kept his own leg, broke his opponent, cashed in on the 3-0 lead and then pushed through. The English didn’t even get a chance to throw a leg. “The overall picture was good. Otherwise you won’t win matches,” said Van Gerwen at RTL 7 Darts. “You have to be sharp right from the start. Don’t make her feel like there’s something to be gained or that the public will get behind it.”
Van Gerwen hit five of the eight doubles and averaged 105.85. Ashton scored an average of thirty points less. ,,I think it could be even better. Let’s use this for later in the tournament.”
Van Gerwen received many questions in advance about the fact that he had to throw against a woman. “It doesn’t bother me much. She is here for a reason.” De Brabander has already won the Grand Slam of Darts three times and would like to get in shape for the approaching World Darts Championship at the end of this year. Van Gerwen plays against Joe Cullen on Sunday.
