Hamilton was by far the fastest driver in qualifying yesterday. Afterwards, however, the FIA found out that its DRS was opening further than the regulations allowed. After a long investigation, the FIA finally decided to remove Hamilton from qualifying. He will therefore start at the back of the sprint race today. Verstappen therefore starts from P1 and has Bottas next to him.
Verstappen will start on the medium tyres, while Bottas will start on the soft tyres. The Mercedes is therefore better off and immediately takes the lead. Sainz also has a mega start in the Ferrari and also manages to pass Verstappen’s Red Bull. At the back of the field, Hamilton immediately passes the Haas and Williams cars.
After four laps, the Red Bull is still too fast for the Ferrari and Verstappen takes second place. After that it is mainly Hamilton who makes his way forward. When the sprint race is halfway, he is in tenth place.
At the same time, Verstappen also comes within a second of Bottas. However, the Dutchman is unable to capture the lead. Meanwhile, Hamilton is doing a great catch-up race and eventually manages to work his way up to fifth place.
Valtteri Bottas will start from pole position tomorrow with Max Verstappen next to him on the front row. Sainz and Pérez start from the second row. Hamilton finishes fifth, but will be moved back to P10 tomorrow due to the grid penalty for the new engine.
