Vaccines A state vaccination research company will be established in Tampere

The state will own 51 percent of the company to be established and the University of Tampere 49 percent. It is managed by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

Government has approved the establishment of a new commercial vaccine research company in Tampere. The establishment of a company called the Vaccine Research Center Finvac Oy has been prepared jointly by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and the University of Tampere.

The state will own 51 per cent of the company to be established and the University of Tampere 49 per cent, and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health will be responsible for its ownership management.

Social- and according to a press release from the Ministry of Health, the purpose of establishing the company is to strengthen Finnish vaccine research expertise in order to obtain well-researched, effective and safe vaccines in Finland and the world.

In addition, the goals are to prepare for health threats such as pandemics and to increase research investment in Finland.

Incorporation in the background is also the Chancellor of Justice Tuomas Pöystin decision of May 2019, that a clearer distinction should be made between commercial vaccine research services and the procurement of vaccines by the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).

A decision on the transfer of THL’s operations to the new company, as highlighted by the Chancellor of Justice, is scheduled for spring 2022.
