The President of the United States, Joe Biden, announced this Friday (26) that the country will restrict travel from South Africa and seven other African countries from Monday (29), due to a new variant of the coronavirus called omicron.
According to CNN, Biden has been advised by Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (Niaid), and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to restrict travel from Africa from the South (where the new variant was detected), Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi, although the US government is still seeking more information on omicron.
The new coronavirus variant detected this week by scientists in South Africa has been recognized as a variant of concern by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Due to its large number of mutations, the variant has triggered alerts in the world and led several countries to impose measures such as the suspension of travel from some African countries.
