What you missed that night in NBA, NFL, and NHL
Dusseldorf While most Europeans are asleep, the North American professional leagues are busy. What happened that night in American football, basketball and ice hockey. Today among other things: Corona pandemic continues to pose major problems for US sport.
Ice hockey: further game cancellations in the NHL
The NHL has canceled further games due to the corona pandemic. As the North American professional ice hockey league announced, the five games originally planned for Thursday (local time) will be postponed. The Christmas break should therefore start after the two remaining games on Tuesday (local time). The number of games postponed due to Corona this season has risen to 49.
According to the NHL announcement, the players will return to their clubs on Sunday (local time), the day should only be used for testing, training or traveling. A negative test result must be presented before entering the facility. Game operations are scheduled to resume on December 27th.
In addition, the league and the players’ union continue to “actively discuss whether players should take part in the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2022”. The reason for this is the high number of postponed games and the “ongoing uncertainty surrounding the pandemic,” the statement said.
The German NHL professional Nico Sturm suffered a defeat in one of the last games before the game was interrupted. The 26-year-old lost 4-7 with Minnesota Wild at the Dallas Stars and played around 13 minutes. Minnesota continues to lead the Central Division after 30 games.
Before the premature break, the games between the Washington Capitals and the Philadelphia Flyers as well as between Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas Golden Knights will take place on Tuesday (local time).
Basketball: Schröder loses with the Celtics – glue in the corona protocol
Dennis Schröder caught a used day on his NBA comeback after a short illness. The German national basketball player lost with his Boston Celtics 103: 108 against the Philadelphia 76ers and suffered loss of the season number 16 (15 wins).
Schröder had eight points, three rebounds and an assist in 25 minutes of play. Center Joel Embiid advanced to the outstanding player of the 76ers with 41 points.
The other Germans also suffered defeats. Isaiah Hartenstein was just as little used in the 92: 116 of his Los Angeles Clippers against the San Antonio Spurs as Daniel Theis in the 118: 133 of the Houston Rockets against the Chicago Bulls.
Stephen Curry once again showed a strong performance. The three-king of the NBA scored 30 points in the 113: 98 of the Golden State Warriors against the Sacramento Kings, but sank “only” four throws from a distance.
The corona wave is now spreading in the NBA. On Monday evening, the German national player Maxi Kleber was also included in the COVID protocol by the Dallas Mavericks. Kleber had already tested positive for the corona virus last January and missed eleven games at the time.
Football: The number of corona cases continues to rise
The number of corona cases in the US football professional league NFL continues to rise sharply. On Monday, another 51 players were included in the COVID protocol, the NFL reported on its website.
There had never been so many positive corona tests on any day before. According to league information, around two thirds of the players are asymptomatic, while the other players who tested positive reported mild symptoms.
In the course of the spread of the Omikron variant, the NFL had recently tightened its security measures. As of recently, all players, coaches and employees, regardless of their vaccination status, are required to wear mouth and nose protection, team meetings must take place either outdoors or at a sufficient distance.
In addition, players are not allowed to eat in groups; meals are only offered to take away. External visitors are also prohibited from traveling.
There was also a change in the protocol for returning vaccinated players who tested positive but are asymptomatic. Under the previous rules, a vaccinated player who tested positive had to show two negative tests 24 hours apart before he could play again. Under the new protocol, vaccinated players who tested negative will be able to return to play more quickly.
Football: Raiders defeat Corona-stricken Browns
The Cleveland Browns, who had to face the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday evening with the third quarterback and without head coach Kevin Stefanski, have been weakened for days by the failures of important players. Regular Baker Mayfield and his representative Case Keenum had tested positive like their coach. With Nick Mullens on the field, the Browns led until three seconds before the end before a field goal by the Raiders sealed the 14:16 defeat. The Las Vegas team is keeping its playoff hopes alive. Both teams are now with seven wins and seven losses and three games before the end of the main round still have a chance of one of the wildcard places in the AFC.
In the NFC, the Minnesota Vikings are also seven wins and seven losses with their 17: 9 win against the Chicago Bears and are therefore fully in the running for a playoff place.
