Local authorities had in custody on Monday 356 Haitian immigrants who arrived in Florida the day before aboard a wooden boat that ran aground near a luxury private club, the Border Patrol said.
The boat ran aground around 1 pm in front of the Ocean Reef Club, located in North Key Largo, the southernmost tip of the US state. “One hundred and fifty-eight immigrants decided to swim to shore,” explained Alan Regalado, a Border Patrol press officer. The other 198 were transferred to a Coast Guard vessel, he added.
The first group is in the custody of the Border Patrol, and the second is in the custody of the Coast Guard. Authorities take charge of fingerprinting Haitian citizens and checking their background to prosecute them, Regalado said. The US Customs and Border Protection Office yesterday announced the opening of an investigation into what it described as an “act of maritime trafficking”.
This is the third time that US authorities have detained Haitian immigrants between their country and the United States in recent days. Human traffickers use the Bahamas archipelago as a starting point to transport people – many of them from other Caribbean countries such as Haiti – to the United States.
