Trump wants to appoint Carr as chairman of the telecommunications regulator
US President-elect Donald Trump wants to appoint Brendan Carr, “a fighter for free expression,” as chairman of the telecommunications regulator FCC. Trump announced this on the Truth Social platform he co-founded. Carr “fought against legal regulations that have suppressed Americans’ freedoms and slowed our economy,” Trump’s statement said. He will put an end to the mass of regulations that paralyze innovators.
Carr, a Republican, has been serving as FCC commissioner for a long time. In his role, he helped modernize infrastructure rules and accelerate the rollout of high-speed networks, according to the FCC website. His reforms would have led to a reduction in bureaucracy worth billions of dollars and expanded America’s global leadership position in the 5G mobile communications standard. According to a report by the New York Times The future government advisor Elon Musk is also said to have spoken out in favor of Carr’s appointment. Carr said on Musk’s Platform X that he was honored to serve in the role.
The post is likely to be particularly important in the new government. The FCC also issues, among other things, broadcasting licenses for radio and television in the USA. During the election campaign, Trump often threatened to take action against political opponents if he won the election, to appoint special investigators against them, to indict them and even to put them in prison – including journalists. He regularly describes the media as “enemies of the people” and wants to revoke the licenses of undesirable broadcasters.
During Trump’s election campaign, Carr criticized the television network NBC for allowing Vice President Kamala Harris to appear on the entertainment program “Saturday Night Live” shortly before the election.
