The mayor of Talavera de la Reina, José Julián Gregorio, has reported in the early hours of this Sunday that the flow of the Tajo river as it passes through the city, which could already exceed the 1,000 cubic meters per second (m3/s), has collapsed part of the Roman bridge, the oldest in the city.
“Tonight is a terrible day for the history of Talavera. Our old or” Roman “bridge” has just collapsed a part. An avenue of terrible water for the city. Thank you that we close it for the citizen step. Today my heart as mayor suffers from this patrimonial loss, “said the councilor in his social network account X.
The mayor has shared a video that shows how one of the arches of the bridge collapses due to the intense current of the river.
In response to the publication of José Julián Gregorio, the president of the PP in Castilla-La Mancha, Paco Núñez, has lamented the collapse: “Much encouragement to Talavera de Reina. Without a doubt it is a painful loss for the city and its history. The concern is maximum right now. I maintain permanent contact with the mayor to which all our support and collaboration for him and his neighbor is trained.”
The Roman Bridge-transitionally known as Puente Viejo or Santa Catalina-is the oldest in Talavera on the Tajo River. With a Roman origin, its construction was retaken at the end of the 15th century under the direction of Fray Pedro de los Molinos, largely maintaining its current appearance. Over the centuries, it has been the subject of several restorations, being the most recent in 2002, according to the city’s tourism office.
Prior to this incidence, the mayor updated the situation of the river as it passes through the city and said that the flow could already exceed 1,000 cubic meters per second (m3/s), in what has described as a “historic avenue.”
For its part, the Government delegate, Milagros Tolón, said that in this emergency situation we must go “minute by minute”, highlighting that the objective is to provide “the greatest security” to citizens.
