WASHINGTON (Reuters) – US consumer confidence further improved in December, suggesting the economy will continue to expand into 2022 despite a resurgence of Covid-19 infections and a reduction in fiscal stimulus.
The Conference Board said on Wednesday that its consumer confidence index rose to 115.8 this month, from an upward revision of 111.9 in November.
Economists polled by Reuters had predicted the index to rise to 110.8 from the previously released reading of 109.5 in November.
The US is facing an explosion of Covid-19 infections, fueled by the Delta variant and the highly contagious Ômicron, which could hurt economic activity in the first quarter.
