The images began to spread like wildfire this Wednesday through social networks when the neighbors realized what had happened: someone had cut down “the only large tree” existing in the parking area of La Molinera, in Murcia. Hardly a stump attests to the presence at this point of the enormous eucalyptus. «They have loaded the largest tree in the neighborhood, the heritage of all the residents; What a pity for a city How is the damage caused restored?», denounced Paco Ramírez, a member of the Barriomar Neighborhood Association, from which it is emphasized that it was a «centenary specimen».
From the Parks and Gardens Service of the Murcia City Council, and with the news already circulating from mobile to mobile, they were quick to clarify that this decision did not come from their Department. The same was done from the municipal area of Development, which pointed as responsible to the company that executes a private promotion of homes included in the Special Plan PE-Br6 of Barriomar. In fact, from this municipal department it was announced that “a file will be opened to the company, to study whether a sanction is appropriate.” Thus, the same sources explain that to undertake actions of this type it is necessary “the authorization of the Department of Development and a favorable report from the Parks and Gardens Service, the construction company lacking both documents.”
The commotion unleashed by this action is also fueled by the controversy that has arisen in recent weeks with the felling of trees in different parts of the city of Murcia, mainly due to the works of the Mobility Plan. If Huermur has already spoken out against this decision, his reaction to the removal of the eucalyptus tree from Barriomar, which is unrelated to the construction projects for the new bus and bike lanes in the municipality, has not been long in coming. In fact, the conservation entity indicated that it has filed a complaint in relation to these facts and has requested to be an interested party in the files that are filed for them. Huermur thus requested that “if after the processing of the corresponding files it is found that the current legislation has been violated, an exemplary sanction be imposed and new trees are forced to be planted”.
Likewise, those responsible for the association described the situation of urban trees in Murcia as “lack of control”, and reproached the Consistory for the lack of adequate municipal surveillance. «The municipality cannot afford to lose more large trees; we have to protect ourselves from the effects of Climate Change and it seems that we are going backwards in this regard. When summer arrives we will suffer the consequences of the extreme heat and we will miss the missing trees”, they concluded.
From the Consistory it was clarified to LA VERDAD that the mobility projects will involve the felling of about 300 specimens, but the planting of up to 350 new trees is planned in exchange in the affected roads. However, from Grupo Municipal Popular the municipal government was demanded to “stop this indiscriminate logging, which threatens the environment and to put a little good sense in these chaotic works that are generating the discomfort of all the residents of the municipality.”
Given these words, the councilor responsible for Parks and Gardens, Ainhoa Sánchez, described these statements as “curious”, since this Tuesday the Popular Party of La Ñora approved a motion to cut down a large specimen of cypress located next to the wheel “of the hamlet The mayor defended that “her government works both for the safety of the neighbors and for the reforestation of the municipality and we will replace all those specimens that have to be removed to guarantee the safety of Murcians and Murcians.”
Meanwhile, from Podemos and IU-Verdes they asked La Glorieta this Wednesday to replace the trees felled by the works of the mobility plan in the same neighborhoods, since these “cannot afford to lose the few natural shades they have” .
