University of Helsinki “This cannot continue” – Recent report: Uusimaa universities have too few places to start and it will pay off in the future

The share of Uusimaa higher education institutions in the entire country’s starting places and those selected to study has decreased by several per cent from 2016 to 2021.

Uusimaa the number of higher education places is clearly lower than in other provinces compared to those in the region.

This is the conclusion of a recent study by the Foresight Chamber. The Foresight Chamber is a co-operation network coordinated by the Chamber of Commerce.

The study examines the number of places to start and the attractiveness of higher education institutions. Leading expert of the Helsinki Region Chamber of Commerce Riikka Vataja says that the share of Uusimaa universities in the whole country has decreased by several per cent from 2016 to 2021.

“The number of starting places in Uusimaa’s universities is underestimated in relation to the demand for study places. This can be seen, among other things, in the large share of primary applicants in higher education institutions in Uusimaa compared to the rest of the country, ”says Vataja in the press release.

Chamber of Foresight considers that, although the number of places to start has increased in recent years, the number of places to start and the number of students selected to study in Uusimaa have remained lower than in other provincial universities.

At the same time, Uusimaa’s share of the country’s study-age and working-age population has increased, and the shortage of companies has deteriorated sharply.

“Both the demand for labor and the share of employers reporting a shortage of experts in Uusimaa have returned to the growth trajectory that started before the corona, and there is no solution to the situation without sufficient investments in the training provided in the region,” says the project manager of the Foresight Chamber. Olli Oja in the bulletin.

According to Riikka Vataja, the equation does not currently work.

“According to forecasts, the working-age and study-age population in Uusimaa will grow until the 2030s, and at the same time there is a growing need for experts in the region, but the number of university start-up places granted to the university’s universities is lagging behind. That cannot continue. ”

Helsinki In January 2022, the Regional Chamber of Commerce conducted a survey of applicants and starting points in higher education in Uusimaa and other provinces with the City Survey TA.
