The United Kingdom Armed Forces deployed this Thursday two fighters after detecting a Russian bomber near British airspaceor, in the North Sea area, as reported this Friday by the Ministry of Defense. The Government has ruled out potential threats to national security.
Specifically, two Typhoon fighters took off from a base in Moray, Scotland, after detect the Russian plane in the “zone of interest” of the United Kingdom. The Ministry has clarified that this aircraft did not enter British territory at any time, according to the BBC.
“Our adversaries should be clear about our firm determination and the formidable ability to protect the United Kingdom,” the Secretary of State for the Armed Forces, Luke Pollard, has warned on his X social network account. “Once again,” he added, the Navy and Air Force have shown that “They are ready to defend the country.”
These types of incidents, known as rapid reaction alerts, are relatively common and, in fact, British authorities reported another similar preventive reaction last week. In that case, the Navy monitored several Russian military ships crossing the English Channel.
This is the second time in three months that UK authorities have detected Russian ships and planes within a week of each other. HMS Iron Duke and the tanker RFA Tideforce followed three Russian ships, which were also being controlled by the Norwegian Navy.
