The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) faces a financial dilemma of significant proportions, after the blocking by the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) of two bank accounts linked to the Faculty of Medicine.
This drastic move arises in the context of an investigation into alleged financial irregularities associated with the money laundering.

The national academic institution, recognized for its excellence in the training of health professionals, was surprised by the freezing of their accounts on January 26when trying to carry out a financial operation.
The action of the UIF, according to REFORMA, not only affects said faculty, but also Luis Arturo González Nava, the administrative secretary of the Faculty of Medicinewhose accounts at several major banks have been blocked, including Banamex, BBVA, HSBC, Santander and Scotiabank.
González Nava, responsible for managing a considerable budget of 2,157 million pesos assigned to the Faculty of Medicine in 2023, is at the center of the alleged financial irregularities.
The UIF and the Ministry of Finance have taken forceful measures, including the inclusion of UNAM on the list of blocked persons, which has triggered a series of legal disputes.
UNAM protects itself from blocking FM accounts
The UNAM has taken legal action to unblock the accounts, presenting a request for protection on February 19. However, the request for provisional suspension to lift the security was denied by a federal judgeintensifying uncertainty about the financial future of the institution.
The situation has become even more complex with the revelation that UNAM was not previously notified of the blocking of the accountswhich has given rise to a solid legal argument in its defense.
The University's Legal Directorate has filed an amparo lawsuit against the UIF, the National Banking and Securities Commission, as well as Banco Santander, maintaining that the action lacks legal basis and is potentially unconstitutional.
In the midst of this legal battle, the case has reached the hands of the administrative judge in Mexico City, Ulises Oswaldo Rivera González, who will be in charge of deciding whether to grant the requested suspension to release the accounts.
This crucial ruling will determine the future course of the finances of one of the most important educational institutions in Mexico and the final resolution on the accusations of financial irregularities that weigh on the UNAM Faculty of Medicine.
