Sergiy Stakhovsky, the Ukrainian tennis player who at his best became number 31 in the world, is already in his country as part of the military resistance against the Russian siege.
The athlete, who competed without problems until Russia invaded Ukraine in February of this year, has kept all his followers up to date through his Instagram account. However, being one of the great public figures who enlisted in the army, he was interviewed in recent days by the Italian newspaper ‘La Stampa’. In the talk, he revealed the support that his cause has had. The Serbian Novak Djokovic, among the most outstanding. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer make up the absentee list.
Djokovic’s support
“Djokovic sent me a message of support and we even had a little chat. I also tried to contact Federer and Nadal but was unsuccessful.”was the first thing Stakhovsky said in dialogue with the medium in question.
Then, after reflecting on the silence of the Swiss and the Spanish, the Ukrainian athlete turned soldier stated: “I am sorry that you prefer to remain silent, although I understand you. It is not your war. We have the support of great personalities, I hope that the support lasts”.
Hours after the interview was published, Stakhovsky posted a snippet of the conversation he had with Novak Djokovic.
“Stako, how are you? Are you on the battlefield?” asked the Serb.
“I’m thinking of you. I hope everything calms down soon. Please tell me where I can send you help, both financial and otherwise…”he added.
“Nole, thank you very much. I’m in Kiev, where everything is very quiet,” Stakhovsky replied.
