War in Ukraine: Yanukovych calls on Selenskyj to surrender
+++ 12.44 p.m.: Former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych called on Volodymyr Zelenskyy to surrender in the Ukraine war. Zelenskyj is still in the capital Kyiv. “You personally have an obligation to end the bloodshed and to reach a peace agreement at any price,” wrote the politician who is close to Moscow in a message distributed by the Russian state agency Ria Novosti on Tuesday (March 8, 2022). “That’s what Ukraine, Donbass and Russia expect from you.” Kiev’s partners in the West would also welcome such a step.
Yanukovych, who is considered extremely corrupt, was overthrown by pro-Western demonstrators in 2014. The 71-year-old has been living in Russia ever since. In his homeland he was sentenced in absentia to 13 years in prison for treason.
Ukraine war: journalist stays in Kyiv despite dangerous situation
Update from Tuesday, March 8th, 2022, 11.30 a.m.: For many journalists, working in both Ukraine and Russia has become dangerous. In the case of Ukraine, it is even life-threatening because of the ongoing hostilities. Nevertheless, a Ukrainian reporter does not want to leave the country, reports the news portal Insider.
38-year-old pregnant journalist Alya Shandra wants to remain in Ukraine. She has already brought her two children to safety with their grandparents in Germany. “But for me as a journalist, it’s important to keep working until the baby comes.” Shandra works as the editor-in-chief of the Euromaidan Press, an English-language newspaper.
Ukraine War: Fight for Kyiv continues – chaos in the city center
First report from Tuesday, March 8th, 2022, 10.35 a.m: Kyiv – The war in Ukraine is coming to a head. Russian troops are northwest of Kyiv and are trying to advance towards the capital from the west as well. Thousands of people wait every day at the main train station in Kyiv hoping to catch a train that will take them from Ukraine’s war-torn capital, news portal Kiyv Independent reports.
According to the report, there are no more exit tickets from Kyiv, which makes little difference since all trains from the Ukrainian capital are now evacuation trains. Everyone, ticketed or not, has to fight their way to the platform, where women, children and the elderly beg the conductors to let them onto the crowded trains.
Ukraine-News: Attack on the capital Kyiv
Russia insists its troops will not attack civilian targets in Ukraine. Nevertheless, it seems almost impossible that Russia’s attack plan for Kyiv will proceed without civilian casualties. Lieutenant General Ben Hodges told US news channel CBS that he does not believe that the forces under Vladimir Putin will be able to take the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.
This is mainly due to the sheer size of the city and the resistance being put up by both Ukraine’s military and the civilian population. Hodges expects “much more destruction and fighting” in and around Kyiv. But in his estimation, the capital “won’t fall.”

Ukraine: Russia resorts to ‘attrition’ strategy to seize Kyiv
Vladimir Putin’s initial strategy was to quickly storm major cities in Ukraine, the incumbent president Volodymyr Zelenskyy* to overthrow and install a pro-Russian government. This failed. Now the Russian military is resorting to a “strategy of attrition” to “achieve the same goal.” The constant rocket fire on cities in Ukraine has helped to achieve “the implementation of effective joint operations”.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s General Staff warned that Moscow was gathering its “resources for an attack” on Kyiv. Russian units also wanted to gain a tactical advantage by reaching the eastern outskirts of Kiev through the Brovary and Boryspil districts, sources said.
Despite the fighting in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy does not want to leave the capital. “I’m staying in Kyiv,” he said in a video message published on Monday evening (03/08/2022). He does not hide and is not afraid of anyone. “Today is the twelfth night of our struggle, our defense. We are all on site, everyone is working. Everyone where he has to. I’m in Kyiv, my team with me.” (Marvin Ziegele) *fr.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
