In Turkey, former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder commented on the Ukraine war. He attributes the cause of the conflict to a missing security architecture.
Ankara – At a conference in Turkey, former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) spoke about the war in Ukraine. As a longtime friend of Vladimir Putin, Gerhard Schröder is increasingly coming under criticism. In his speech, which he held in English, he pinpointed the cause of the Ukraine conflict to the political failure of the West.
Ukraine war: Gerhard Schröder comments on the conflict
“We have not yet created a security architecture that takes into account the changed situation after the fall of the Berlin Wall; the relationship between Russia and the United States. And the war in Ukraine is a consequence of this political failure.”
On the other hand, Schröder did not mention the role of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Ukraine war in his speech. Rather, the 77-year-old speaks of the challenges for Europe as a result of the conflict. Europe must take more responsibility for its own security. However, Europe should “not only refer to the military level”.
Criticism of Schröder because of his Russia connections
The CDU politician Michael Brand had already pushed for sanctions against former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder on Monday (March 21) because of his connections to Russia. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) must ensure that “Schröder, who was placed in leading positions in the Russian energy sector by Putin himself and who collects hundreds of thousands of euros for representing the interests of the warmonger Putin, is also sanctioned,” said the spokesman for human rights policy CDU/CSU parliamentary group daily mirror.
Schröder is considered a longtime friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He is also the head of the supervisory board of the Russian state energy company Rosneft. As a result of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the former chancellor came under increasing criticism. He had called on the government in Moscow to end the war as quickly as possible. But there was no talk of personal consequences. (jsch)
