French footballer Benjamin Mendy of Manchester City has to defend himself in court in Stockport on Wednesday against six charges of rape. The 27-year-old defender has been in pre-trial detention since the end of August.
Mendy was initially charged with four counts of rape and assault, but two charges of rape have been added. The offenses allegedly took place between October 2020 and August this year.
Mendy and a 40-year-old friend of his have been charged by four people over the age of 16, according to British justice. They are due to appear in court on Wednesday. Multiple requests from Mendy to be released on bail were rejected by the judge.
Manchester City paid around 60 million euros four years ago to take over Mendy from AS Monaco. The left back was three times champion of England with City and was part of the French selection that won the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Mendy played ten international matches for France.
