Indonesian authorities are searching this Wednesday for 24 fishermen after the shipwreck that occurred over the weekend of a ship near the island of Sulawesi, in an incident that has already left 2 dead and 11 survivors.
The National Agency for Search and Rescue (BASARNASaccording to the Indonesian acronym) coordinates the operation in which several groups and local and regional authorities participate, the entity indicated in a statement.
The mission focuses on the waters around the Selayar archipelago, south of the island of Sulawesi – a central region of Indonesia – where the ship with 37 fishermen sank on Saturday morning due to sea weather while on a journey between Jakarta and Lombok.
The rescue teams found ten survivors and two deceased on Monday, while on Tuesday they found another person alive, the emergency teams said in a statement published the day before.
Maritime accidents are common in Indonesia due to poor infrastructure, overloading of passengers and goods, lax compliance with safety regulations and inclement weather.
