Twitter ‘closes offices’ after Elon Musk’s pledge of allegiance sparks wave of resignations
The Twitter saga continues: a thousand employees, mostly engineers, have decided to quit after Elon Musk sent an email asking employees to sign a document in which they commit “long hours of high-intensity work to build a revolutionary Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world.”
after theultimatum of the South African tycoon have left the mass resignationsespecially all of those engineers responsible for fixing bugs and preventing outages. This fact has raised many questions about platform stability, so much so that notable figures like U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have tweeted for followers to look her up on Instagram or by email. The same did the profile of the French government and other states, which wrote to users on which other platforms to find them.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also wrote: “To all Twitter employees: You’ve all built a vital place to connect, and you deserve so much better“.
The mass resignations came mainly due to Musk’s ultimatum via email, but there is also another reason: the billionaire had recently said that employees could no longer work remotely, except to renege on what he said after he saw his best engineers leave. In fact, he released another memo saying employees would be allowed to work remotely if their managers confirmed they were doing an “excellent job.”
Then came the news of offices closed with immediate effect until next Monday, without giving reasons or details. The message with which Twitter communicated the news asks employees “to continue to abide by company policy by refraining from discussing confidential information on social media, with the press or elsewhere”.
But these business management practices aren’t limited to Twitter: nine employees of his aerospace company SpaceX have in fact revealed that they were fired for criticizing the tycoon in a critical “open letter” shared in recent days in an internal chat, in which they attacked Musk’s “harmful behavior on Twitter”. “Elon’s public behavior is a frequent source of distraction and embarrassment for us,” the letter read.
