Volkswagen’s range of electric sports cars is preparing to change its skin. Or rather to change its name, given that the German manufacturer itself has announced that it will soon abandon the name GTX on its future high-performance battery-powered models: Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer made this known, adding that the GTX brand will be phased out as the company works to electrify the brands GTI and R high performance.
Goodbye to Volkswagen ID. GTX?
“GTX is the high-performance brand referring to the MEB platform, but in the future we’ll go back to the GTI and R badges for the development of future products”, Schafer’s words collected by Autocar. We remind you that initially the GTX badge should have been reserved exclusively for high-performance electric vehicles equipped with the four-wheel drivealthough the new ID.3 GTX remains powered by a single engine mounted on the rear axle.
Back to the Future
A story destined to last three years or so: The GTX badge was first used by Volkswagen for the flagship versions of the ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs in 2021, and has since been extended to the entire ID electric family, with GTX versions of the ID. 3, ID.7 and ID.Buzz revealed in recent weeks. As mentioned, the process of expanding the GTX range will be stopped: the reveal of last year’s ID.GTI concept car is a sign that goes in this direction.
GTI and R
So we’ll see how Volkswagen will fare with the GTI and R badges. The German automaker is still shaping the future of the brand internally GTI (but stressed the importance of staying true to one’s roots), while he has yet to give even a hint as to what an electric R car might look like, while confirming that the R family will become an all-electric performance brand by 2030.
