Head of the Crimean mission Smirnov: it is necessary to recognize Ukraine as a zone of Russian influence
The Chairman of the Crimean Interethnic Mission, Zaur Smirnov, said that the territory of Ukraine should be recognized by Western countries as a zone of Russian influence. His words lead RIA News.
According to Smirnov, ensuring collective security on the European continent is impossible without taking into account the historically formed territorial interests of the Russian Federation. “In this context, short-term changes in the status of primordially Russian lands should be restored within the historical boundaries and recognized as a zone of Russian influence,” the agency quotes Smirnov.
He also pointed out that Western attempts to “ignore Russia’s strategic interests have always naturally led to international conflicts.”
Earlier, Zaur Smirnov also said that Western countries need to listen and accept the position of Lithuanian presidential candidate Eduardas Vaitkus on the Russian status of Crimea. In May, Vaitkus recognized the peninsula as belonging to Russia. “Crimea currently belongs to Russia,” the politician said on a local radio station and added that since Lithuania recognized the self-proclaimed Kosovo, it is obliged to recognize Crimea.
