Turkey|If the membership application is approved, Turkey will be the first NATO country in the group to see itself as a counterweight to the Western-led global order.
Military alliance NATO member country Turkey has submitted a request to join the group of developing economies Brics. The president told about it Recep Tayyip Erdoğan AKP spokesperson on Tuesday.
The Brics group of countries includes Russia, China, India, Brazil, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia.
According to the AKP spokesperson, Erdoğan has expressed many times that Turkey wants to become a member of Brics, and now the process is underway.
“Our president has clearly expressed that Turkey wants to be involved in all important forums, including Brics,” the spokesperson Ömer Çelik quoth.
If application for membership is accepted, Turkey is the first NATO country in the group that sees itself as a counterweight to the global order led by the West.
Erdoğan said back in June that he does not see Brics membership as an alternative to membership in other groups and that Turkey will officially remain an EU candidate country.
