Day after day, month after month, car manufacturers around the world try to locate the light at the end of the tunnel of the microchip and semiconductor crisis. But this light still seems to be very distant today: more and more brands are forced to announce new production stops due to the lack of fundamental components. Daimler in Hungary took care of it, now it’s the turn of Toyota in the mother country: the Japanese car manufacturer has made it known that it will extend the production cuts already in force in some of its local factories.
According to reports from Reuters, the new production stop announced by Toyota will involve a loss of approximately 9,000 cars. The models most affected by this disruption will be Lexus and Land Cruiser models, with the latter series already struggling to keep up with ever-growing demand. From this point of view, it is not an easy time for Toyota: the Japanese company continues to deal with situations of shortages in the supply chain in other markets as well, for example in Vietnam and Malaysia. Toyota certainly does not want to give up though: it seems that the Japanese brand had even gotten to the point of ask suppliers to recover lost production so that 97,000 more vehicles can be built between December and the end of March, perhaps with the addition of additional shifts over the weekend to meet demand.
Recall that Toyota has set a annual production target of 9 million vehicles, after reducing the previous one by 9.3 million units established a few months ago. An achievable target? A spokesperson for the Japanese automaker said: “We would like to keep the target at 9 million units, but we will continue to keep an eye on the situation”. There is therefore cautious optimism, but a new productive readjustment based on the evolution of the situation cannot be excluded.
