Mick Schumacher’s 2022
Two placements in the points zone, several mistakes on the track and above all many criticisms by the Haas team principal Günther Steiner, with subsequent termination of the relationship. If one could describe the 2022 season of Mick Schumacher with the US team, this could probably be one of the most brutal and synthetic summaries, but still crucial for understanding the reasons why the 24-year-old German is not present in Formula 1 today as an official driver.
Mick Schumacher today
At present, Schumacher occupies the role of third driver of a top tier team like the Mercedes (in addition to collaborating with another reality like McLaren), but the hypothesis of his return to the starting grid for the next few seasons is far from obvious. To have perhaps contributed to his current situation was also the pressure exerted by excessive expectations towards him, being the son of a legend of the sport such as Michael Schumacher, seven times world champion. To this, unfortunately, were added the critical and still unknown health conditions of the latter, victim of a ski fall in 2013. Since then, Mick has approached the world of F1 without the support of his father, accessing it in 2021 only to then leave the scene the following year. A season also characterized by the tensions that arose with Steiner, in several cases very critical of his driver. But if there had been Michael’s presence in the pits, would the results have been the same?
Ralf Schumacher’s opinion
For another member of the Schuamcher family like RalphMick’s uncle and winner of 6 GPs, this would have been enough to keep his nephew on the starting grid: “If my brother had been on site, Günther Steiner would often have behaved differently – explained to f1-insider – I think Michael’s presence would have been enough.”. A direct opinion without too many words, as typical of Ralf Schumacher in his declarations of all kinds, but which is not far from that expressed by another Formula 1 figure like Franz Tost.
No doubts for Tost
The AlphaTauri team principal believes that the presence of Michael Schumacher would have guaranteed his son the continuation of his career as an official driver, also because, again according to Tost, this role would not be an undeserved ‘gift’ for the third Mercedes driver: “If his father had been by his side, Mick would still be one hundred percent in Formula 1 – explained to Sports1 – everything would have been different only for Michael’s personality, also because Mick deserves a place in Formula 1. Fortunately, he is now the third driver for Mercedes. He just has to keep working hard and hoping for an opportunity to present itself, and then take it. I am convinced that he will do it ”.
