“The ‘Speak Louder Than Your Ar’ campaign is, I think, one of the most successful initiatives for us rheumatology patients, especially those with a pathology such as rheumatoid arthritis. And it is for several reasons: it provides information to the patient, in addition to implementing communications in the research field. As president of Anmar I wanted to join this project because I see that many people with the disease are still confused. Especially after the pandemic, many have tried to find news on the use of certain drugs elsewhere while the campaign offers targeted information on the pathology and treatments “. Silvia Tonolo, president of the National Association of Rheumatic Patients welcomes the initiative promoted by AbbVie with the patronage of Anmar and Apmarr, because “it aims to encourage the relationship between doctor and patient”, explains Tonolo.
“A dialogue that can only take place within the clinic. In fact, it is here that a particular empathy is born thanks to which the patient, reassured by the right information, is more inclined to follow the therapy continuously. Let’s not forget that the enclosed leaflet drugs sometimes disorient those suffering from a pathology, while inside the clinic the patient has all that information and therefore be more adherent “. Not only. Inside the clinic, according to Tonolo, we must speak more and more of remission: “a word that is synonymous with hope, which makes us glimpse the light at the end of the tunnel – underlines the president of Anmar – which gives us the possibility of see our life in pink, to return to normal and to have a good quality of life. For this reason it is essential that the doctor and patient address all topics, from drug therapy to the patient’s personal life, work and sexuality, without forgetting the problems related to the psychological aspect, the management of the pathology and personalized therapies “.
Regarding the therapies for patients with rheumatoid arthritis currently available, for Tonolo “they are sufficient to guarantee a good quality of life”. After “the advent of biologics in 2000, we have seen a marked improvement in these patients. But it is necessary to personalize treatments. Not all patients are the same, not all have the same medical history and many often have comorbidities as well. Today, thanks to these drugs, fortunately we can have a better quality of life but they must always be shared with the rheumatologist “, he concludes.
