The pesetas have been out of circulation for years now. After a brief period coexisting with the euro, on February 28, 2002 they were definitively withdrawn from circulation, and since then the community currency has been the only legal tender.
However, these currencies can still continue to bring benefits to some of their owners. To do this, it is necessary that the coin have some extraordinary value due to its rarity or its very good state of conservation.
The peseta coin that can be worth 7,500 euros
The peseta has 130 years of history and throughout this time it has witnessed numerous political, social and economic changes. Likewise, it has had numerous circulations and that is why those that are less common reach a higher value among collectors who go to auctions to get their hands on the best specimen.
As the FNMT explains, “on October 19, 1868, the peseta was born as a monetary unit by decree of the Provisional Government.” One of the peseta coins of great value and appreciated by collectors is the one peseta coin from 1869. That year, according to the National Mint and Stamp Factory, they were minted this year by the Madrid mint.
The characteristics of the one peseta coin from 1869
From this period, as highlighted in Coin Collectors, there are two coins of great value. One issued with the inscription on the obverse of ‘Provisional Government’ and another with the word ‘Spain‘.
Both coins feature the stars 18-69 and a fineness of 835 thousandths in silver and a theoretical weight of 5 grams. They also present the acronym ‘SNM’ which, according to the portal, correspond to the names Donato Álvarez Santullano, Rafael Narváez and Ángel Mendoza Ordóñez.
It is the second one that has reached a higher value at auctions, according to Coin Collectors. In 2019, The company Tauler & Fau auctioned a copy of the latter for 7,501 euros. In 2022, the same company auctioned another for a value of 3,500 euros, while the company Fritz Rudolf Künker did the same in 2021 for 2,000 euros, according to what is stated on the portal.
