Cleaning tip of the weekThe house could use a major overhaul once in a while. Cleaning expert Marja Middeldorp therefore helps to solve everyday problems. This week: removing moss from the garden tiles.
It will be above zero outside for the next few days and Marja thinks that is a great temperature to roll up your sleeves outside. ,,We haven’t really had to deal with ice and snow this winter, but who knows, it will come. In any case, I have been busy for a while to prevent moss and other green deposits on the balcony from settling too much in the tiles. It can be different on cold nights slippery slippery turn into.”
If you’ve been following the cleaning guru with her weekly tips for a while, you know she’s better than the cure. ,,You should not leave everything in the garden or balcony and only stick your head out in the spring. Put on a nice scarf and you will get warm with these chores.”
Green soap better than salt
There are several ways to remove green deposits. I know of two: with green soap or with salt. Salt is easiest. You sprinkle it on and it comes loose. But watch out: the plants do not like salt in the soil. It does more harm than good for the borders.”
With green soap you have the same effect, but you prevent a salty soil, continues Marja. “Put green soap in a bucket or tub. Mix it with water: about a quarter of water and three quarters of green soap. That makes it easy to spread. Then grab some kind of broom with a stiff brush and short bristles, one of those – oh, what’s that thing called, a funny name – sloth! They aren’t exactly lazy. You spread the green soap on the tiles. Don’t scrub! Let it soak for a while. Then throw warm water over it and the moss will come off easily. Sweep it up and throw it in the green bin.”
Cleaning awnings or awnings
The attack sometimes also settles in the awnings or awnings. “There can be dirt between the folds of your awning. Turn it off, grab a soft broom and sweep the top and bottom. You will see that there is quite a bit of dust coming off. Everything should be dry enough then. If you keep it clean, you also prevent it from getting mouldy.”
“If you have it down anyway, take a good look at the screws, bolts and hinged parts,” says Marja. “Put a spray of silicone oil in it, so that it continues to run nicely. spring, if you need it again, no longer open, now is a great time to do that.”
To finish the outside job, Marja gets to work on her door. ,,Then I grab some polishing wax and grease the outside door well. This absorbs into the wood and has a protective effect. It shines again and is winter-ready. And while I’m at the door, I take the doormats with me. Also something that many people leave quietly all winter, but that makes it very dirty. I myself am still of the carpet beater on Friday, so that your visitors can easily wipe their feet. If you don’t have a carpet beater, you can vacuum it. But do me a favor: if the doormat is too dirty, throw it away and buy a new one. Otherwise, you take everything inside with you every day.”
