And it will move more with the times. That makes the third generation GR86 a little less fun.
It is the car for the real enthusiast, the Toyota GR86, previously known as Toyota GT86. As with the Mazda MX-5, there are those who say the car needs more power, but then you miss the complete point of both cars.
Precisely because there are no large heavy engines available, it means that the weight (and thanks to the rear-wheel drive also the weight distribution) are optimal. The car is also affordable. And yes, a Volkswagen Golf GTI or Honda Civic Type-R are more practical and faster, but those are just upgraded hatchbacks, while the MX-5 and GR86 are purebred sports cars. A naturally aspirated engine, rear-wheel drive, manual transmission and low weight. That these cars are still being built in 2022!
Still a successor
But everything comes to an end and so does a car like the Toyota GR86. The car is no longer available in the Netherlands (on the Toyota’s website is no longer listed).
This generation is still quite young and will have to last a while, in any case there will be a facelift in a few years. But the Japanese Best Car Web is already looking a little further. Toyota is already working on the development of the successor. So there will be a third generation GR86!
Apparently Toyota is going to move away from the ideas of the GR86. First, the platform. The current version is on a unique variant of the TNGA bottom section.
The new one would be on a shortened bottom plate of the Lexus IS. Toyota will make the same ‘mistake’ as BMW. The BMW 2 Series (Coupé) and BMW Z4 are much too heavy for their size (high BMI) because they are based on an existing sedan (the BMW 3 Series in both cases).
Weight of third generation GR86
Weight is going to be a thing for the next GR86 anyway, because this generation will get hybrid drive. According to Best Car Web, it is the 1.6 liter three-cylinder humming top from the GR Corolla that will serve in the front of the sporty coupé. The electrical part of the hybrid setup comes from the new Toyota Crown.
It remains to be seen in what form it is true what is claimed. It is true that Best Car Web often comes up with very bold statements. Everyone had to laugh that the fourth generation IS got a 5.0 V8 and the name IS500, something that actually happened in the end.
The question is not so much whether Toyota can keep the GR86, but what they have to change in order to be allowed to sell it at all.
