A strong solar storm can affect, for example, electricity supply and satellites.
A decade major solar storm continues over the weekend. The northern lights can therefore be seen almost all over Finland even on the night before Sunday.
“Such a massive space storm usually lasts for three to four days,” says the meteorologist on duty at the Finnish Meteorological Institute Jari Tuovinen.
Northern lights occurs most on the “peak days” of the solar storm, which fall on the weekend. The night before Saturday colorful northern lights were also visible in southern Finland.
On the night before Sunday, south of Rovaniemi should be clear around midnight. Only Western and Northern Lapland are partly under cloud cover. In the north, seeing the northern lights is starting to be difficult at this time anyway because of the bright nights.
In cities and urban areas, you should choose the place carefully.
“There should be a larger field area or similar, because light pollution causes a disturbance. You can’t necessarily see anything from your own backyard.”
By day a solar storm may affect navigators, satellites, radio connections and even power supply. The Finnish Meteorological Institute sends warnings about possible disruptions to, for example, electricity companies and airlines.
The greatest effects are felt at high northern and southern latitudes. Based on the warnings, for example, the routes of flights crossing the polar regions can be changed.
An accurate record of disturbances is not kept, even if they are detected. Most of the disturbances are quite common.
“For example, if you are in the wilderness in one of Lapland’s national parks, it can be difficult for your cell phone to find a field in a wider area than usual.”
During a major solar storm, authorities send out warnings at a rapid pace around the globe. Because the Earth rotates, the area of strongest influence is constantly changing.
Solar storms are known to have caused blackouts in Sweden and damaged electrical infrastructure in South Africa in 2003.

Solar storms are the result of what happened in the Sun in the last few days from strong eruptions and related corona mass eruptions. Mass eruptions that hit the ground cause strong geomagnetic storms.
