The Community collaborates in a plan to promote biodiversity in the area
The Community, through the Consortium of the Routes of the Region of Murcia, has launched an action plan aimed at the conservation of wildlife and the promotion of biodiversity along the Vía Verde del Noroeste Nature Trail, a Itinerary of 78 kilometers that extends between Murcia and Caravaca de la Cruz and which also constitutes one of the main pilgrimage routes to this city through the Camino de Levante.
The first of these actions has been the installation of drinkers and feeders for wild birds at different strategic points along the route. The objective is that these elements facilitate the survival of the specimens during the coldest days of winter and the harshest of summer thanks to the contributions of food, in addition to facilitating their reproduction and promoting specific places for their observation.
These points will be monitored by specialists to control the species that visit them and may be supplemented in the future with other elements of biodiversity production, such as innkeepers, perches, temporary ponds for amphibians, structures designed for invertebrates and nest/shelter boxes for both small birds (swallows, house martins and swifts) and bats, both of which are so important in pest control.
The implementation of this initiative is in line with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, especially with point 15, referring to the fight against the degradation and loss of biodiversity.
It is also aligned with the promotion of nature tourism contemplated in the Strategic Plan for Tourism of the Community 2022-2032, which will help to reinforce the enhancement of the network of Greenways, some itineraries that connect some of the most representative landscapes and valuable of the Region and that promote safe, healthy and sustainable experiences linked to active, cultural, sports and gastronomic and oenological tourism.
Currently, the network of Greenways in the Region includes the Northwest Greenway Nature Trail, the Campo de Cartagena route, the Mazarrón route, the El Hornillo pier in Águilas, the Almendricos route, the Chicharra Cieza route and the Chicharra Yecla through more than 170 kilometers that can be enjoyed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.
