An investigation revealed this Thursday the presence of 19 harmful substances that are associated with plastic in disposable menstrual products, such as tampons and pads. This has been revealed after an analysis carried out by the Rezero foundation, which promotes a healthy society free of toxic waste, together with the Institute of Environmental Diagnosis and Water Studies (IDAEA-CSIC).
Specifically, research has determined that these essential goods could compromise the health of women and future generations with effects such as reproductive disorders, diabetes or even obesity. To reach this conclusion, the foundation has analyzed 10 samples of feminine intimate hygiene products from various brands sold in Spain.
The study, which has been supported by the Department of Equality and Feminism of the Generalitat, has detected the presence of 19 plasticizers of the 36 substances investigated. Thus, the vast majority are the so-called organophosphorus esters, a compound found in nine of the 17 substances analyzed. Additionally, phthalates—a colorless liquid with a faint aromatic odor—have been identified in four of nine others.
For their part, six other alternative plasticizers to phthalates have been detected among the 10 substances analyzed. Many of these compounds, especially the organophosphate esters, They can have carcinogenic, neurotoxic and endocrine disrupting effects..
Stop marketing
In this way, and as these are essential products in the lives of many people, the foundation has demanded political responsibility to implement measures that guarantee safer and more environmentally friendly menstrual products.
Along these same lines, the Rezero association has demanded the application of the “Precautionary Principle”, by which “prohibit marketing” of tampons and pads classified as harmful in order to prevent them from remaining on the market. This measure would be implemented while waiting for the aforementioned “strict regulation to avoid toxic substances” in products in direct contact with sensitive areas of the body.
