The alleged attacker, a 27-year-old Eritrean refugee, seriously injured himself after the crime
The suspect in the murder of a 14-year-old girl and seriously injuring her 13-year-old friend, a 27-year-old Eritrean asylum seeker, remains silent as he recovers from injuries he allegedly inflicted on himself with a knife shortly before being arrested. The man suddenly and without saying a word attacked the two girls early this Monday morning in the town of Illerkirchberg when they were on their way to school. The eldest died shortly after being admitted to a hospital, while her friend remains stable in gravity. A spokesman for the Prosecutor’s Office in charge of the case said Tuesday that the suspect seriously injured himself and had to undergo surgery for several hours. He is also hospitalized, although under permanent police surveillance.
The Prosecutor’s Office of the nearby city of Ulm, in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, is currently studying whether to present an arrest warrant against the suspect or if there are indications that he may suffer from a mental disorder, for which reason his possible admission is also being considered. in a high security psychiatric hospital waiting for a medical expert to make a first diagnosis, said a spokesman for the public prosecution. He also pointed out that the young Eritrean has no criminal record and had never drawn attention to violence until now, although he was once detained for traveling on public transport without a ticket. The attack on the two schoolgirls occurred in the middle of the street of the residential town for unknown reasons at 7:30 in the morning. The two young women received deep stab wounds to the suspect’s torso.
The 14-year-old teenager had to be revived at the scene before being transported to a hospital, where she died a few hours later. The Ulm Public Prosecutor’s Office explained that the second 13-year-old girl has spent the night in hospital, where she is being treated for her injuries. She stressed that these are so serious that the alleged perpetrator of the attack is also being considered for attempted murder. The spokesman did not venture to speculate about the victim’s state of mind, but stressed that she has psychological assistance. After the attack, the suspect took refuge in a nearby residence for asylum seekers, from which he had left a few minutes earlier armed with a knife. In that place he was arrested shortly after by a special police assault unit, which also detained two other young men of Eritrean origin for questioning.
They investigate the reasons
Both were released today after giving a statement and confirming that they had nothing to do with what happened. In a statement from the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior, it is emphasized that “now the Prosecutor’s Office and the Police are investigating the reasons for the attack on the two girls and whether the suspect and the two girls knew each other.” The holder of that portfolio, the Christian Democrat Thomas Strobl, assured that “we will fully clarify these terrible events” and noted that “this crime deeply moves us because the life of an innocent girl has been brutally extinguished”, in addition to expressing his condolences to the families and relatives, as well as their schoolmates and friends.
Strobl declined, however, to comment on the origin of the suspect. “The background to the crime, especially the motives, are not at all clear,” commented the regional minister, while the Police appealed in a statement “not to generalize suspicions against foreigners, refugees and asylum seekers or encourage or support this type of suspicions». After the death of one of the teenagers, the crime could have political consequences since the suspect is an asylum seeker. Several politicians from the ultranationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD) have already taken advantage of the event to charge against the German asylum policy and feed xenophobic and racist theories.
