In Almere sounds loud very hard from a black box in front of the entrance to the distribution center of supermarket chain Lidl, where about sixty tractors block the entrance. “It is impossible to take action without it chafing,” says dairy farmer Jeroen van Maanen from Zeewolde.
The farmers have been here since 4 a.m. with tractors and large dump trucks. Transport cars from the supermarket will not be able to enter the site. The farmers have put banners on their vehicles. ‘With this policy I will lose my future’, ‘Bitch whores, no farmers’ and ‘Farmers and citizens hand in hand, for a sustainable Netherlands.’
Those citizens quickly feel the consequences of the blocking actions in the supermarket. In addition to this Lidl distribution center in Almere, about twenty Dutch distribution centers of Jumbo, Albert Heijn, Lidl, Coop, Vomar and Plus have been blocked. That is half of all distribution points in the Netherlands. “Fresh products, such as vegetables, fruit and dairy, are delivered to the supermarkets several times a day. They are therefore directly affected by a blockage. In the long run, it will lead to empty shelves,” says a spokesperson for the Central Bureau for Food (CBL), the branch organization of the supermarkets.
